On Faeries - A Life's Work
Author's Note
One could argue that I'm completely off my nut and they wouldn't be far from the truth. After completing my first draft of The Key of Neverhence, the first novel in the series, I decided that I would be writing more novels in the world of Fae.
A lot more.
So what would possess a nominally sane human being to want to write over 100 books about the land of bottomgaggers? Read on...
Foreward and Onward
The faeries of Adura are different than those you've come to know. They're still just as mischievous as the ones you've grown to love, they're just a little different...
Cloud Faeries
As the name implies, Cloud Faeries live in kingdoms in the sky, as far from humans as they possibly can. They dont like to be bothered with the plight of mortals, and are seldom seen outside the kingdoms.
Typically cloud faeries dont like to intervene. They'd rather not be bothered by such drama. It is extremely rare that one offers help directly. They figure that if an individual wants something badly enough, they will figure out a way to get it.
Cloud faeries typically have clear white hair and light purple, pink, gold, or green eyes. Blue and brown-eyed faeries are virtually nonexistent without the aid of magic. Of course, this could be accomplished by breeding with a human, a detestable act to say the least.
Religion
Tamir is the primary religion among cloud faeries, bestowed upon them by Ylysse, the first faery of Adura. While the cloud faeries claim that Ylysse was a cloud faery in her own right, this is not accurate. Ylysse was in fact a faery of pure light, an elemental if you will, able to take the form of her choosing. Still, this has not stopped the cloud faeries from adding Ylysse to their own lineage and hijacking Tamir as the final word on divinity.
Names
It should be no surprise that many fae name their daughters after Ylysse. The majority of cloud faery names are conjugations of Ylysse and another name, such as: Y'lana, Y'mira and Y'lia.
Superstitions
Cloud faeries tend to be extraordinarily superstitious. They are big on numbers and have great disdain for the number 23. According to The Book of Tamir, the first faeling of Adura born to Ylysse died suddenly on the 23rd hour of the 23rd day.
22, on the other hand, is considered a very lucky number. Go figure.
Lucky numbers: 4, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 64, 112, 118,
545, 720
Unlucky numbers: 5, 23, 46
Faeries of the Flame
(More coming...)
Faeries of Pure Light (Elementals)
Faery elementals are the rarest of all creatures in all of Adura. While their offspring are frequently visited by elementals in their dreams, especially children, not a single case in a conscious state has been substantiated. Using magic to locate one is also a futile effort, for elementals are particularly clever their aura.
Ylysse
Faeries argue that the stars themselves are elementals, the brightest of all being the aforementioned Ylysse. As the story goes, Ylysse returned to the stars in order to preserve their alignment and thus, the order of the universe. Such is a common fiction that faeries amuse themselves with; however, it is widely accepted that at very least Ylysse was an otherworldly creature. There is proof of her solitary visit, but the same does not hold true of others of her kind. Perhaps one day she'll return and clear up the matter, but it is more prayer than plausibility.
Dark Faeries of the Withered Vine
The Dark Faeries of the Withered Vine have many names, and are known as the Netherfaery, Shadowfae, the nepshil, and Nanimus. They were cast out of the faery kingdoms long ago and have been at war ever since. Presently, there have been 11 wars of fae and the dark faeries are thought to be extinct.
But that was until a human bumbled his way into the faery kingdoms...
The Grey Faeries of Dust and Ashe
Cast into void and long forgotten, The Grey Faeries of the Dust Bowl dwell in shadow, feeding off the magical potential of other creatures. They are cannibalistic by nature, occassionally feasting on their own when the need arises.
Blind by nature, grey faeries can see only with the aid of magic and have heighted senses of smell and sound. They also have surprising magical potential. Less is known about their social structure and innate customs, if they do in fact exist.
